Prior to Title IX, there wasn't a wide variety of women's sports participation in high schools and colleges throughout America. Representative Patsy Mink led America for women's rights in sports, and pressed for a law that required equal participation access for everyone. Her leadership led to the passage of this amendment on June 23, 1972, opening many doors for women. Mink's legacy included more women's sports opportunities and funding.
