Patsy Mink and Title IX: The Effect On Women’s Sports

I wanted to do a History Day topic that related to soccer or sports, because sports is a really big part of most kids' lives. I also wanted to do something about sports, because I love sports, and there are a bunch of leaders within sports that I look up to. Title IX led women and girls like me to be able to do the sports that I love.
I first started off by gaining the basic information on Title IX, and looking at leaders who created the amendment and their actions that made them influential in the signing of Title IX. I used many different sources to create my website.
I went to the Wilson Library and the George Latimer Central Library to get book sources. I also found tons of secondary source articles. A lot of them were about the 40th anniversary of Title IX. In these articles I found quotes and helpful points of view from different types of people about Title IX. These articles show what it has done for people, and how it has impacted the community, schools, and universities. Some of my most important sources were newspapers and charts that clearly showed the impact of Title IX for women in sports. The newspapers showed the reactions of community members as they heard about Title IX. My favorite sources, though, were the videos that showed Patsy Mink giving her opinion through speeches and interviews about how Title IX affected women's lives. I also got an email interview with Gwendolyn Mink, Patsy Mink's daughter. It was fascinating to read about her perspective and her analysis of Title IX.
My understanding of Title IX has changed a lot since I started this project. Most girls and women take for granted the work that leaders in the past did to change the future in sports and education. I now realize how until recently women were excluded from just about anything extra curricular that involved school and sports. I now understand that because of Patsy Mink, women’s futures are changed forever.
I have seen tons of History Day projects in the last few years, but the ones that really drew me in were the websites. I love using technology to make digital websites and videos. I think that the things you can do with websites really engage you with your topic and you have a better understanding of your argument.
My topic connects to Leadership and Legacy, because if Patsy Mink hadn’t stepped up and led, women would not have equal educational and sports participation rights. There wouldn’t be a diversity of sporting opportunities for women. Without Title IX, women's athletics wouldn't have a legacy.
Title IX is an important event in history, because now young girls can play sports and have female role models to look up to. It raises their confidence and lets them know that if they set their mind to it, they can achieve anything.
